What is a kicker?

The kicker is the highest card in your five that isn't part of your combination. Two players with the same pair? The kicker quietly decides the whole pot.

The classic example

You hold A-K, your opponent holds A-Q, the board comes A-9-7-4-2. Both of you have a pair of aces — but your five is A-A-K-9-7 and theirs is A-A-Q-9-7. The king outranks the queen: you win. This is why AK is a premium hand and domination is so expensive: same pair, worse kicker, ~27% equity.

When the kicker doesn't play

A kicker only matters if it makes the best five. With a straight, flush or full house, all five cards are the combination — nothing left to kick. And sometimes the board outkicks you: holding A-3 on a K-K-9-8 board with an ace… your 3 never plays, because the best five uses the board's cards instead. That's how surprise split pots happen.
