Which hands to open-raise

Preflop is the easiest street to play well: when the pot is unopened, you either raise or fold. Which one depends on your cards and your seat — later position, wider range.

Three defaults do the heavy lifting: no open-limping (raise if you play at all), fold most hands (even the button folds more than half), and widen by position — UTG opens ~13% of hands, the button ~38%. T = ten, "s" = suited, "o" = offsuit.

The charts

Gold = open-raise. These are solid teaching defaults, not gospel.

Drill: raise or fold?

Random seat, random hand, folded to you. Make the call.

Why does the seat matter so much? Refresh positions — and when someone raises before you, that's a different (tighter) story we'll cover in the 3-bet lesson.
